What to Expect After a PRP Injection

The days after a PRP injection follow a predictable pattern. Here is how to plan recovery at home and when to check in with your physician.

The first week after a PRP injection is usually the most noticeable, and the plan for that week affects the final result. At Zest 4 Wellness, Dr. Ward provides written recovery instructions after every procedure.

The first 48 hours

Expect some soreness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Over-the-counter cold packs and elevation can help, and most patients resume light daily activity the same day. Ask your provider before taking anti-inflammatory pain medications, since some may interfere with the intended response.

  • Apply ice in short intervals if the area is sore
  • Avoid heavy lifting or pounding activity in the treated area
  • Keep the injection site clean and dry
  • Follow the specific rest and movement guidance you were given

The first weeks

Over the following weeks, the treatment area may feel stiff, full, or uncomfortable at times; that is generally part of the expected response. This is not the same as the ache of an acute injury, and Dr. Ward will help you tell the difference.

When to call your doctor

  • Fever or signs of infection
  • Pain that is much worse rather than stable
  • New numbness or weakness
  • Swelling that keeps increasing beyond a few days

When progress is reviewed

Follow-up timing depends on the joint and the condition, but a common pattern is a check-in several weeks after the injection and a more complete review at eight to twelve weeks. Continue with the clinic's rehabilitation plan between visits.
